Behavioral Support Services

At Stone County Developmental Disability Board, we are committed to providing compassionate and effective behavioral support services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) using the science of Applied Behavior Analysis.

What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?

ABA is a science-based approach to understanding and improving behavior. It’s all about using proven techniques to teach skills and reduce concerning behaviors by breaking things down into small, manageable steps.

When working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), ABA is used to help them develop essential life skills—like communication, social interaction, and daily living tasks—by reinforcing positive behaviors and reducing barriers to learning. It’s personalized, data-driven, and goal-oriented, making it one of the most effective ways to support independence and quality of life.

What We Offer

Our highly trained team of ABA professionals works collaboratively with each person served, their families and caregivers to develop personalized support plans tailored to their unique strengths and goals. Whether at home or in the community, we focus on goals that are meaningful for each person. All ABA services are developed and monitored by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®) who is also a Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) in Missouri.

Our Services Include:

Behavior Assessments

  • Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) – This is all about figuring out why a behavior happens. We look at what happens before, during, and after the behavior to find patterns. The goal? Identify what the person is trying to communicate or achieve with their behavior so we can teach an alternative way to meet that need.
  • Skills-Based Assessments – These check what a person can do and what skills they may benefit from learning. It could be communication, daily living skills, or social interaction. This helps create a personalized support plan that focuses on strengths and areas for growth.

ABA Therapy

  • ABA therapy is a structured, science-backed way to help individuals or groups of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities learn new skills and improve behavior. It’s like a personalized coaching program that breaks learning into small, achievable steps while using positive reinforcement to encourage progress.
  • ABA Therapists work on things like communication, social skills, daily routines, and reducing concerning behaviors by teaching alternative skills. Everything is based on data, meaning progress is tracked and strategies are adjusted as needed.
  • At its core, ABA therapy is all about helping individuals become more independent and successful in their everyday lives—one step at a time!

Family and Caregiver Support

  • Family and caregiver support is a vital piece of successful ABA services. It is all about giving parents, caregivers, and support staff the tools they need to help a person succeed—not just during therapy, but in everyday life. Think of it as coaching for the caregivers, so they can confidently support learning, communication, and behavior outside of structured sessions.

This support covers things like:

      • Understanding behavior – Why does it happen, and how can we respond effectively?
      • Reinforcing positive skills – Helping individuals practice and generalize what they’ve learned.
      • Handling challenges – Strategies for managing concerning behaviors in a supportive way.
      • Building routines – Making daily life smoother and more predictable.
  • The goal? Empower families and caregivers with practical, easy-to-use strategies so progress doesn’t stop when the therapy session ends!
